Research and Design Team

Beth Ferguson is the founding director of the Adapting City Lab and assistant professor in the UC Davis Department of Design. She is an ecological designer whose practice blends industrial design with sustainable transportation, solar engineering, climate resiliency, and public engagement. Ferguson is the director of Sol Design Lab, a design/build studio that specializes in solar charging stations and was awarded the Austin Green Award in 2017 for the Austin Energy Electric Drive Solar Kiosk. She participated in the Resilient by Design Bay Area Challenge with the interdisciplinary team Public Sediment, which won the Honor Award for Analysis and Planning from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Best Places Award from the Environmental Design Research Association in 2019. Her interdisciplinary work has been exhibited at the Exploratorium Museum, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, TEDx Presidio, Bay Area Maker Faire, and the Otago Museum in New Zealand. Her collaborative work has been featured in Fast Company, The New York Times, BBC and Texas Architect Magazine. Jovita Wattimena is a designer, fascinated by design’s role in development. With her undergraduate degrees in Design and Economics from the University of California, Davis, she is currently an intern in Adapting City Lab. Having spent her life between Indonesia and the United States, Jovita implements elements of inclusivity and adaptability in all her work, regardless of its medium.

Tracy Corado is a designer whose work focuses on developing exhibitions that encourage curiosity and inquiry in approachable settings. She uses an interdisciplinary process the combines design, art, science, and technology to create experiences and spark new perspectives. Tracy has helped the Adapting City Lab to develop their Designing with the Sun curriculum. She received her M.F.A. in Design from the University of California Davis and her B.F.A. in Interior Design from California State University Long Beach. Her previous work includes visual displays, wayfinding graphics, museum exhibitions, and commercial interior architectural design projects throughout California. Tracy is currently a graduate intern in the Design Department at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Yusuf Azam is an industrial designer with a focus on transportation and vehicles. He is fascinated by the development of electric vehicles and how design influences interaction with EVs. He is currently studying design at the University of California at Davis. Working as an intern for the Adapting City Lab, he will focus on implementing a solar powered charging station at UC Davis, which provides a seating area as well as charge their electronics, e-scooters, and e-bikes. His design philosophy is heavily influenced by geometry and biomimicry.

Lucy White is a rising senior at UC Davis’s department of Environmental Design. This summer, she will be working as an intern with Adapting City Lab to improve micromobility in Oakland, California. This projects aim to strengthen first and last mile connections in public transit and improve urban bike safety. Lucy is extremely interested in BioDesign and hopes to participate in the BioDesign Challenge this upcoming year at UC Davis.

Dr. Angela Sanguinetti is a Research Environmental Psychologist at UC Davis Energy and Efficiency Institute and Institute of Transportation Studies. She directs the Consumer Energy Interfaces Lab (cEnergi.ucdavis.edu), where she leads research on the theory, design, and evaluation of eco-feedback interfaces that nudge consumers toward more responsible resource use. Dr. Sanguinetti also studies consumer adoption of energy-efficient technologies and influences of the built environment on sustainable behavior. She has a PhD in Planning, Policy & Design with an emphasis in Design-Behavior Research from University of California, Irvine, and an M.S. in Behavior Analysis from California State University, Stanislaus.

Dallas Swindle is an industrial designer and fabricator who works in metal, fabric, and wood. Dallas is a designer at Sol Design Lab, a design/build studio that specializes in solar charging stations and public art. All of Dallas’ work is rooted in and stems from an intense love of learning and an insatiable curiosity for the way that everything works.
