This research focuses on environmental design of first and last mile connections between micromobility and public transportation stations. Shared micromobility (bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters) has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, traffic congestion, and air pollution, particularly when replacing private vehicle use and integrating with public transit. The design of the built environment in and around transit stations plays a key role in the integration of shared micromobility for first and last mile travel, by facilitating access to shared vehicles, protected bike lanes, and parking and charging for docked and dockless bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters.

The research team has conducted site surveys, stakeholder interviews, bicycle and transit maps, to present a case study of nineteen Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) rail stations in the California Bay Area, which are served by seven shared micromobility operators. The project received a UC ITS Senate Bill 1 Research grant and has been presented at conferences and in a policy brief with recommendations for transit managers and regulators.
